Select-an-Effort: Shoes
Believe it or not, the first month of the new year is already winding down. Time sure flies when you are having fun; in our case, having fun getting organized. 
Today on “Select-an-Effort: Organizing Tasks for 2023” we are going to work on an item that often clutters our spaces: shoes. In my experience, shoes have a way of ending up scattered about all over the home. Let’s see if you can make some progress to snapping your shoe collection into order.
Here are the choices:
Low Effort
If all you have is small bit of time today, simply pick up some shoes that have piled up and put them back where they belong. For instance,
- Dress shoes belong in a bedroom closet
- “Daily” shoes can be lined up along a wall in an entry area.
- Specialty shoes (e.g., cleats, ballet slippers, etc.) can live in an activity or sports bag.
- Dirty shoes (wet/muddy) can be placed on a boot tray or stored in the garage.
- Out of season shoes can be moved to a bedroom closet or stored in a box in a remote storage area.
The goal for the low effort option is simply to restore your shoes to where they belong.
Medium Effort
If you want to do a bit more, as you sort your shoes for relocation, identify one or two pair that you can either donate or trash.
Especially if you have growing children, it is common to come across some shoes stashed at the bottom of a basket or tucked in the back of a cubby that no longer fit. Now is a great time to pass these along to someone else who can use them.
High Effort

There are limitless options for products you can get to organize your shoes. My advice is to measure your space and consider your needs.
- Do you want to maximize horizontal or vertical space?
- Do you like a solution where each pair of shoes sits in its own cubby, or would shoes tossed in a bin work better?
- Do you have a preference for type of material, such as bamboo over plastic?
- Do you need structure to hold in-season shoes or out-of-season shoes?
