Ideas to help you get your home office up and running today.

Whether you’re just starting to work from home, or you just want to create a space in your house where you can be productive, a home office can help you organize your life by keeping your work separate from your living space.

If you have a separate room you can dedicate as a home office, that’s ideal, but it’s not mandatory.

If you can find a corner of your home to designate as your home office, you’ll be able to keep the rest of your home more organized because your work items will have a home.

I’ve worked from home for over five years now, and I’ve set up my home office in different areas of the homes we’ve lived in. 

At one point, my “home office” was just a big tote bag where I stored all of my work stuff.

Now I have a separate room that doubles as a home office and a homeschooling space. Sharing it with my kids has been an adjustment, but it’s also been helpful.

When we enter our home office, it’s like we’re “going to work/school,” and it’s time to get busy!

Home Office Tips

If you’re setting up your first home office, or if you just want to make your current home office setup more efficient, here are some home office tips to help you make the most of your work space:
Decide where you want your desk.
Before you re-arrange anything, figure out the optimal place to put your desk.

If you depend on internet access for your work, make sure your wifi or ethernet connection will work in your home office.

Everything revolves around your workspace, so make sure you have it where you can get the most work done.
Set up your workspace for maximum comfort.

If you’re going to be working from home a lot, it’s worth it to invest in a quality office chair.

Make sure your screen is at the right height so you don’t have to slouch all day to see your computer, and make sure your frequently used items are easily accessible.
Put an inbox on your desk.

All new paper, letters, etc. go in the inbox.

This reduces paper clutter and makes everything easier to find.

Even if it’s an organized chaos, it’s better to dig through your inbox than rifle through your whole entire house in search of an important paper.

Set up a paper organization system for your home.
Having a good system for dealing with paper will save you hours of time and frustration. Make this a priority!

Make sure your work space has good lighting.
I like to have my desk right by the window, but you may prefer a secluded corner with a nice lamp.

Just make sure you can see what you’re working on!
Have a trash can/recycling bin close to your desk.

That way you can easily declutter as you work.

This actually ends up making a huge difference in the amount of clutter on your desk!
Use a printer? How often?

If you use it a lot, put your printer in a place that’s visible and easy to get to.

If you only use it once or twice a week, a printer storage cabinet can keep it out of sight and clear up more surface area for you to work.
Set boundaries for working at home.
When your friends and family find out you’re working from home, they’ll likely think it’s okay to call/visit unannounced during the work day. Here’s a good article about setting boundaries for yourself and others.
Plan to manage noise.

If you’re new to working at home, you may be surprised to find that your house gets really noisy in the middle of the day.

From lawn mowers, to leaf blowers, to screaming kids, some days it can seem like you’ll never get any quiet.

Invest in some nice noise canceling headphones for those moments when you need more quiet.
Manage home distractions.
When you’re working, it’s easy to think of all of the little things you need to do around the house.

Instead of stepping away to move the laundry from the washer to the dryer, write down the home things you want to do on a notepad.

When it’s time for a break, consult your list and take care of those little tasks.
